WHO WE ARE

The GLBT National Help Center is a non- profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to meeting the
needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community and those questioning their
sexual orientation or gender identity. We are an outgrowth of the Gay & Lesbian National Hotline,
which began operating in 1996 and is now a primary program of the GLBT National Help Center.

We offer several different programs including two national hotlines that help people talk about the
important issues that they are facing in their lives.

People call us from all across America. Most of our calls are from small towns in rural, conservative
parts of the country, where many of our callers just don't feel safe yet going anywhere and talking
to someone face-to-face. Many of our callers talk to us about things that they've often kept bottled
up inside for years. Our callers know that we will show them compassion and respect.

The GLBT National Help Center also helps other organizations build the infrastructure they need
to provide strong support to our community at the local level.

GAY & LESBIAN NATIONAL HOTLINE

1-888-THE-GLNH (1-888-843-4564)

The Gay & Lesbian National Hotline provides telephone and email peer-counseling, as well as
factual information and local resources for cities and towns across the United States.

All of our services are free and confidential.

We speak with callers of all ages about coming-out issues, relationship concerns, HIV/AIDS anxiety
and safer-sex information and much more.

We also maintain the largest resource database of its kind in the world, with over 18,000 listings,
including local hotlines and community centers, social and support organizations, GLBT-friendly
businesses and professionals

GLBT NATIONAL YOUTH TALKLINE

1-800-246-PRIDE (1-800-246-7743)

The GLBT National Youth Talkline provides telephone and email peer-counseling, as well as factual
information and local resources for cities and towns across the United States.

Our telephone volunteers are in their teens and early twenties, and we speak with teens and young
adults up to age 25 about coming-out issues, relationship concerns, parent issues, school problems,
HIV/AIDS anxiety and safer-sex information, and lots more.

Our resource database contains information on social and support groups, as well as gay-friendly
religious organizations, sports leagues, student groups and more.

OUR OTHER PROGRAMS

The National Association of GLBT Hotlines acts as a clearinghouse of information for our
independent, member organizations. We provide technical assistance to help existing hotlines across
the country.

The National GLBT Resource Database of Record currently contains over 18,000 local GLBT
resources, and is the largest of its kind in the world. This database acts as a way for tens of thousands
of organizations to maintain and access the most current contact and descriptive information in one
central location. In addition, the database will become available to other non-profit organizations across
the country, thereby eliminating their need to maintain duplicate information.

The GLBT National Help Center also directly operates two local hotlines. The Gay and Lesbian
Switchboard of New York is the oldest operating GLBT hotline in the world, having celebrated over
33 years of active service to our community. The phone number for this local hotline is 212-989-0999.
The GLBT Hotline of San Francisco can be reached at 415-355- 0999.

Update from the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats
www.capitalstonewall.org
April 6, 2006

In this roundup:
1. Update on the PA "marriage amendment"
2. New local poll on the amendment (voting ends noon Friday); We won the last one
3. Capital Region Stonewall Democrats endorse Rendell, Casey & 4 other candidates for May 16 primary election
4. Harrisburg's out gay councilman Dan Miller featured in Philadelphia Gay News
5. Tues. 4/4 Patriot-News: Leading backer of PA 'marriage amendment' angers adoptive parents by saying biological parents are always better
6. New national report says 47% of African Americans favor legal recognition for same-sex couples, and that members of Congress who favor the anti-gay "marriage amendment" generally have low voting ratings from the NAACP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; poll also says the top priorities of African Americans are economy and jobs; health care and prescription drugs; education; and Social Security.
7. Upcoming LGBT/related events in the Harrisburg region

1. First, the bad news: the proposed "marriage amendment" to the state Constitution is on the House voting schedule for April 24.
Now, the good news: your efforts helped to keep the amendment's supporters from ramming it through this week, which was a very real possibility. This gives us almost three more weeks to educate legislators and the public about all the downsides of this amendment ( H.B. 2381). For more information on why this amendment is a horrible idea, and how to contact your state representative to stop it, visit www.capitalstonewall.org/amendnew.html
If you've already called your state rep about the amendment, please consider sending a letter to the editor to your local newspaper about it.

2. Another Central PA newspaper is conducting a phone and online poll on the "marriage amendment." This time it's the Harrisburg Patriot-News. You have until noon Friday (April 7) to vote --you can call (717) 255-1212 (or 254-1212 from the Carlisle area) and press 1037. You can vote online at http://www.pennlive.com/patriotnews/content/poll.html
The question is "Do you support changing the state constitution to forbid same-sex marriages?"
As of 10:30 PM Wednesday, our side -- "No" -- was winning 60.5%-39.5%, but that can change quickly. The results will be published next Wednesday, April 12.
Last week, we won the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal's phone poll on the same issue, 52%-48%, with more than 1,500 votes cast -- pretty impressive considering how conservative Central PA is supposed to be. We showed we can mobilize our side!

3.
CAPITAL REGION STONEWALL DEMOCRATS MAKE ENDORSEMENTS
FOR MAY 16 PRIMARY ELECTION

At our March 27 meeting, the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats endorsed the following candidates for the May 16 primary election:
-- Governor: Gov. Ed Rendell -- www.rendellforgovernor.com
-- U.S. Senate: Bob Casey -- www.bobcaseyforpa.com
State representative races:
-- 87th District (Camp Hill, part of Wormleysburg, and East Pennsboro, Hampden and Silver Spring townships): Joe Lombardi -- www.gojoewin.org
-- 95th District (York City area): Rep. Steve Stetler -- http://repstetler.com
-- 103rd District (Harrisburg, Steelton, Highspire and part of Swatara Township): Rep. Ron Buxton -- www.ronbuxton.com
-- 104th District (Susquehanna Township, Penbrook, Paxtang and most of northern Dauphin County): Dennis Coffman (no website yet, but you can call him at (717) 541-1389 or e-mail him at dencoffman@mac.com)
We chose not to endorse in the lieutenant governor's race or the 91st District state House race (Adams and Franklin counties).
We did ask other candidates to respond to our questionnaire but focused on getting responses from those who face one or more other Democrats in the May 16 primary election. We will be pursuing answers from those other candidates after the primary.
